Brief history of Dermatology<\/h2><\/header>[vc_column_text]Throughout life and on a daily basis, the skin, the largest organ of the human body, acts as a protective barrier against various environmental influences, making it of enormous importance. In addition, it also has the essential function of regulating body temperature and is responsible for sensory functions.<\/p>\n

Brief history of Dermatology<\/p>\n

The beginning of the History of Dermatology dates back to 1504, when the regulations of the Royal Hospital of All Saints created the “Casa das Boubas” with the purpose of providing assistance to patients with venereal disease.<\/p>\n

Since then, the History of Dermatology has been marked by innovation, rigor, and professionalism of all those who have contributed to it in some way. In 1911, the reform of Higher Education took place with the creation of the Faculties of Medicine of Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra, with the teaching of the specialty of dermatology and syphilology being foreseen.<\/p>\n

In 1936, S\u00e1 Penella founded the Portuguese Society of Dermatology and Venereology (May 22, 1936).<\/p>\n

Laborat\u00f3rio Edol, a company with exclusively national capital since 1952, also owes its name to the partnership it has maintained with this specialty since then (EDOL – Dermatology and Ophthalmology Company of Lisbon).<\/p>\n
